How do you replace a garage door cable?

Garage Door Cables will lose their function due to rust. The cable loops get rusted and snapped is the top reason. The cables may pop out and disorder after the garage door spring is broken spring or the bearing plate gets stuck.

Safety First. Do not attempt any garage door repairs unless you have all the proper tools and safety equipment.

Follow the steps to replace a garage door cable.

  1. Use a locking plier to seal the spring shaft to void its rotation. Alternatively, you can completely release the spring tension by unwinding all springs.

  2. Unscrew the cable drum and release the cable if the cable is not loosened yet.

  3. If the cable loop is still on the bracket bolt. Unscrew the door bottom bracket and take out the bracket. You now can easily take out the cable loop.

  4. Insert the new cable loop onto the bracket bolt and screw the bracket back to the garage door

  5. Run the cable along the vertical garage door track to the cable drum. Make sure nothing blocks or sticks the cable.

  6. Put the cable head into the cable drum and then rotate the drum to tight the cable.

  7. When the new cable becomes straight from bottom to top, tight the drum screws.

  8. To change the other garage door cable, repeat the above process.

  9. Wind the spring if you release the spring tension before, and release the plier after winding.

Congratulations! You complete your project now.
